You are pregnant and on the top of the world. However, your gynaecologist has tagged you in the high-risk category and has given certain do’s and don'ts to follow. It may seem overwhelming and you might wonder what to do with your pregnancy being categorised. There is nothing to worry about that because all you need to do now is be prepared and just follow what the doctor says.

You can be in a high-risk pregnancy if you or the baby may have an increased risk of health problems, either before delivery or after. Understand the risk factors well, and you will be able to ride the risks and deliver a healthy baby.

When does a high-risk pregnancy happen?

A high-risk pregnancy happens when there is a medical condition that’s present either before your pregnancy or something that’s developed during the pregnancy and this condition has proved to be harmful either for you or your baby. It could also be due to the following situations also:

  • The mother is either too young, younger than 17 years or too old, older than 35 years.
  • Has the habit of consuming alcohol regularly, takes illegal drugs, smokes cigarettes
  • Was overweight or underweight before pregnancy
  • Has high blood pressure, diabetes,
  • Has mental health issues like depression
  • Have had premature labour the previous time
  • Have birthed a child with a medical defect or genetic problem
  • Is pregnant with twins, triplets or more

Complications that may arise during the pregnancy like abnormal placenta position, rhesus (Rh) sensitization (a serious condition where the mother’s blood group is Rh-negative and the baby's blood group is Rh-positive.)

  • Eat a healthy and balanced meal because your baby needs all the healthy food, not sugar and fat
  • Have all the vitamins that the gynaecologist suggests, especially folic acid and calcium.
  • Get proper prenatal care, so when the gynaecologists give you appointments, make sure you meet them all
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and water.
  • Daily exercise is very important, but before doing them, consult your doctor on how much physical exercise you need to do
  • Some pregnant women get ill when they are pregnant if so, ask your doctor if you need to get a flu shot
  • Sleep well because nothing can give you the desired rest like a good night’s sleep.
