Did you know that looking after yourself would let you look after yourself in a better way? Being a mom is a frustrating challenge for many, especially when it's your first child. Your world may look rosy and terrible all at the same time, and if you notice that you are not acting like yourself, then you are probably not looking after yourself properly.

One of the first things you must focus on when you are pregnant is getting antenatal care. Its importance is often underestimated, but things are changing. Getting the best antenatal care will ensure the physical and psychological benefits of the mom-to-be. Regular antenatal check-ups and visits to the gynecologist would make your pregnancy smooth and event-free.

Why do you need antenatal care?

Screening

In regular antenatal care, there would be regular screening of how your pregnancy is doing. This would help detect and prevent early complications like pregnancy diabetes, hypertension and get treatments. Regular screening would help measure the heart rate and monitor the health of the baby.

The diet

Once you have given birth to your baby, and are breastfeeding, you have to continue with the same care in diet that you had when you were pregnant. The body undergoes a lot of changes when you are pregnant, so you need to rest a lot, eat good food and exercise regularly. New mothers may be tired, busy and hungry, but it is important to eat healthy, eat in the right amount, with right amount of calories. Avoid uncooked foods, undercooked eggs and meat, raw fish and unpasteurised cheese.

Hydrating well when you are breastfeeding

Breastfeeding mothers need to drink a lot of water because they are constantly active and have a lot of responsibilities. Always keep a bottle of water by your side, so you will be reminded to drink at regular intervals.

Mothers need to rest too

It is easy for young mothers to be apprehensive about looking after their babies. They worry about their babies and drive themselves to the point of exhaustion. In the first few weeks, your baby will have to be fed every 2-3 hours. Slowly the hours between feeding will increase, but until then you have to feed. Try to sleep when your baby sleeps, so you will get as much rest as is possible. You may not get full night’s sleep for a long while, but rest whenever you can.
